works on documentaries, movies and commercials

Alexander studied film, communication research  and political science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Bond University (QLD, Australia). During his studies, he worked as a cinematographer for various film and television productions and was responsible for the camera work of numerous short films.

After graduating in 2009, he focused on producing documentary works for German television. In 2017, he teamed up with director Michael Schwarz to create his cinematic debut, DIE KANDIDATEN. His first feature film, MODELL OLIMPIA (directed by Frédéric Hambalek), celebrated its world premiere at the Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn in 2020.

Two more feature films followed in 2024/25: the documentary DER TOD IST EIN ARSCHLOCH (Death Is an Asshole) about Berlin “funeral punk” Eric Wrede (premiered at the Max Ophüls Prize 2025; theatrical release: 27 November 2025) and Frédéric Hambalek’s second feature film WAS MARIELLE WEISS, which premiered on 17 February 2025 in competition at the 75th Berlinale.

His work moves between documentary storytelling and fictional staging and is characterised by a clear, contemporary visual language that creates intimacy and conveys attitude without being intrusive.

Alexander Griesser was nominated for the German Camera Award in 2017 and 2021.
